Afternoon Tea in Thame

Spread Eagle Hotel

Indulge in Afternoon Tea

It’s the seventh Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Russell, who we have to thank for the invention of afternoon tea, sometime around 1840.  Due to increasing urbanisation and the rise in industrialisation (including the spread of gas lighting in England), the evening meal was becoming later and later.

So it’s with pleasure that we carry on this timeless tradition at The Spread Eagle Hotel, a 15th-century inn nestled in the heart of Thame. pure elegance amidst historic charm. Finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and preserves, and a tempting array of pastries, all served in our atmospheric surroundings. It's the perfect escape for a leisurely afternoon with friends or a special celebration, offering a taste of quintessential English luxury in a setting rich with centuries of stories.

No afternoon tea at The Spread Eagle would be complete without the renowned Thame Tart, a local speciality that perfectly encapsulates the flavours of our charming market town.
